Incredible culture, football and fandom, Barcelona will always be one of the most glamorous football destinations in Europe. Home to one of the biggest football clubs in the world, FC Barcelona, the city offers everything a travelling football fan could want.

The regional capital of Catalonia, Barcelona has something for everyone, stunning Gaudí architecture, historic museums, spectacular eating and drinking, multiple beaches and, of course, a reputation for football. FC Barcelona’s matches at Camp Nou are a bucket-list visit for many.

27-time La Liga winners and five-time European Cup winners, Barcelona played at the city’s Olympic Stadium during the Camp Nou renovation, and are scheduled to return to their 90,000-plus seater home through 2026. Either way, tickets are available for most domestic and European fixtures.

Chapter 01

Camp Nou

Camp Nou opened in 1957 and has been Barcelona’s home ever since. Originally built with a capacity of around 90,000, it has hosted some of the most defining moments in football, from Cruyff’s Dream Team to the Guardiola era, from Messi’s first goal to his last as a Barcelona player.

The current redevelopment will return the stadium to a capacity well over 100,000 once complete, making it the largest football venue in Europe. The new design retains the bowl character that defined the original while adding modern infrastructure and improved sightlines throughout.

During the renovation, Barcelona played at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Montjuïc, itself a venue with deep sporting history, having hosted the 1992 Olympic Games. The Olympic Stadium’s capacity of around 56,000 made tickets more accessible than the full Camp Nou typically allows.

The club has put aside a dedicated section for members of local supporters’ groups to generate atmosphere, at the Olympic Stadium, in Sector 111; historically the North Goal at Camp Nou. Wherever they sit, Barça supporters create some of European football’s most distinctive matchday choreography.

The Camp Nou of today carries the weight of every supporter who has ever sung from these stands. To be inside on a big night is to feel that history in real time.

Més que un club, more than a club. Barcelona’s motto has guided everything from Cruyff’s reinvention to Guardiola’s era to the present rebuild.

Chapter 02

Matchday

Barcelona on matchday is a sensory experience. Las Ramblas in the morning, tapas along Sant Antoni in the afternoon, then the metro out to the stadium, the city blends football culture with everyday Catalan life in a way few other places manage.

For visitors attending a match, arriving early lets you take in the build-up. The walk to the ground via Avinguda Maria Cristina and Plaça Espanya is the matchday tradition for most travelling fans.

Take the metro. The L3 (green) line serves Camp Nou directly via Palau Reial or Les Corts. For the Olympic Stadium, the L3 to Espanya is the easiest route.

Arrive early. La Liga only confirms kick-off times around a month in advance. Once you have your fixture, build the day around it, pre-match tapas and a walk through Plaça Espanya are part of the ritual.

Visit the museum + stadium. The Camp Nou Experience tour gives access to the dressing rooms, press areas, the player tunnel and pitch side. Combined with the Barça Museum it tells the club’s full history.

Chapter 03

Beyond the Pitch

Barcelona is a must-visit destination that seamlessly blends football fervour with stunning architecture and rich cultural experiences. Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia and Parc Güell are the city’s most iconic landmarks, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites and essential stops.

Las Ramblas, the city’s most famous pedestrian street, is lined with shops, markets and restaurants. La Barceloneta, Barcelona’s fishing district, features the city’s best urban beach and a sea of traditional seafront eateries. Spanish, and specifically Catalan, cuisine, with cava sparkling wine from the nearby Penedès, defines the eating and drinking culture.

A weekend football trip might involve a morning at the Sagrada Familia, an afternoon along Barceloneta beach, and an evening watching Barça at Camp Nou. Few European cities pair football and city quite this generously.

Neighbourhood Guide

Les Corts

Around the stadium

The district surrounding Camp Nou. Quieter than central Barcelona but transforms on matchdays as supporters arrive on the metro and walk to the ground.

Gothic Quarter

Historic & central

Barcelona’s medieval old town, narrow streets, hidden plazas, the cathedral. The natural starting point for any first-time visit.

Gràcia

Bohemian & local

A neighbourhood of independent bars, small squares and a strong village feel within the city. Less touristy than Las Ramblas, more characterful.

Barceloneta

Beach & seafront

Barcelona’s fishing district with the city’s best urban beach and a strip of traditional seafront restaurants and bars. The matchday-weekend wind-down.
