Madrid is home to two of Spain’s most famous football clubs, but the identity of Atlético Madrid has always been distinct. Known for its passionate supporters and fiercely competitive spirit, Atlético represents a different side of the Spanish capital’s football culture.

Watching Atlético play offers a glimpse into one of the most intense matchday atmospheres in European football. From the steep stands and sweeping roof of the Metropolitano to the songs of the Fondo Sur, the experience is one of European football’s most distinctive.

Atlético Madrid is the people’s club of the Spanish capital. Built on resilience, fierce loyalty and a refusal to play in anyone’s shadow, the club’s identity is felt in every corner of the stadium and the city beyond it.

Chapter 01

The Metropolitano

Atlético Madrid’s home is the impressive Metropolitano Stadium. Opened in 2017, it replaced Atlético’s historic former home, the Vicente Calderón, which stood beside the Manzanares River for more than fifty years.

With a capacity of nearly 70,000 spectators, the Metropolitano is one of the most modern stadiums in Europe. Its sweeping roof structure and steep stands help create a powerful atmosphere during matches.

The famous Fondo Sur stand, behind the goal, leads the chants and songs that echo through the stadium before kick-off. Atlético’s supporters are among the most vocal in Spanish football and the section is the heart of every matchday.

The stadium hosted the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final, reinforcing its reputation as one of Europe’s premier football venues. For visiting supporters, the experience of an Atlético match remains one of the most intense in European football.

Before every match, the stadium echoes with the club anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, sung by tens of thousands of supporters. The moment remains one of the most powerful traditions in world sport.

For the fixture list

There is no club quite like Atlético. The roar of the Fondo Sur, the rojiblanco scarves, the defiance of being Madrid’s other team. It is football at its most devoted.

Chapter 02

Matchday

Madrid is a city of two football identities and Atlético’s is the louder. Around the Metropolitano on matchdays, red and white scarves, fan zones and the rumble of the metro all add up to one of the most distinctive build-ups in European football.

For visitors attending a match, arriving early is essential. The plazas around the stadium fill with food stalls and supporters meeting friends, and the atmosphere builds from kick-off minus two hours.

Take the metro. Estadio Metropolitano station on the L7 line provides direct access to the stadium and is the easiest route from the city centre.

Get inside early. The pre-match build-up inside the stadium is part of the experience. Atlético’s supporters are among the most vocal in Spanish football and the songs from the Fondo Sur echo throughout the bowl before kick-off.

Visit the club museum. The Atlético Madrid Museum inside the stadium complex runs through the club’s history via trophies, historic shirts and interactive exhibits celebrating the club’s legends.

Explore the fan zones. The wide plazas surrounding the Metropolitano fill with food stalls, merchandise vendors and supporters meeting friends. Energetic but welcoming, particularly for visiting fans.

Chapter 03

Beyond the Pitch

Madrid offers football supporters a unique opportunity to experience two contrasting football cultures. While Real Madrid is often associated with glamour and global success, Atlético represents resilience, determination and fierce loyalty from its supporters. This contrast makes Madrid one of the most fascinating football cities in the world.

Beyond football, Madrid offers world-class museums and architecture. The city’s famous Golden Triangle of Art includes the Prado Museum and the Reina Sofía. Historic landmarks such as Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol remain central gathering places for locals and visitors.

A weekend football trip might involve a morning at the Prado before joining 70,000 supporters inside the Metropolitano for an evening match. There are few cities in Europe that pair football and culture this generously.
