Chapter 01
The Cathedral
Anfield first opened in 1884 and originally served as the home of Everton Football Club. Following a dispute over rent, Everton moved to Goodison Park in 1892, and Liverpool Football Club was formed to occupy the stadium.
Over time, Anfield developed into one of football’s most iconic venues. The stadium has expanded and evolved throughout its history while retaining the sense of intimacy and atmosphere that supporters cherish.

The famous Kop stand, built in 1906, became synonymous with Liverpool’s passionate fan culture. The steep single-tier stand has long been regarded as one of the most atmospheric places in world football.
Anfield has witnessed countless historic moments: Liverpool’s dominant European campaigns in the 1970s and 1980s under Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley, more recent Champions League nights, and two Premier League titles won under Jürgen Klopp and current manager Arne Slot.
Before every match, the stadium echoes with the club anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, sung by tens of thousands of supporters. The moment remains one of the most powerful traditions in world sport.

Chapter 02
Matchday
Liverpool is a city where football forms a central part of local identity. Visitors quickly notice the deep connection between the club and the community. Murals, flags and memorabilia appear throughout the streets surrounding Anfield.
For visitors attending a match, arriving early is essential. The streets around the ground come alive hours before kick-off, and the build-up is part of the experience.
Visit the Shankly Gates. The iconic entrance honours legendary manager Bill Shankly. The first stop for any first-time visitor.
Arrive early. Supporters gather around Anfield Road and the surrounding streets hours before kick-off. The pubs fill up quickly, so get there with time to spare.
Take public transport. Buses and taxis are the most convenient routes to the stadium. Driving on matchday is not recommended.
If you can, take the tour. Visiting on a non-matchday? The Liverpool FC Museum runs through the club’s history via trophies and memorabilia. Worth a couple of hours.

Beyond the Pitch
Liverpool’s cultural influence extends far beyond football. The city is famously the birthplace of The Beatles, whose legacy continues to shape its identity. Landmarks like the Cavern Club, where the band performed during the early years of their career, remain part of the pilgrimage.
The historic waterfront, for many years a UNESCO World Heritage site, reflects the city’s maritime heritage. The Royal Albert Dock is its most recognisable landmark. By Train

The main station, served by direct trains from London Euston (2hrs 15min), Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds. Right in the city centre.
By Air

Liverpool John Lennon Airport is 30 minutes from the centre by bus or taxi. Manchester Airport is around an hour but offers a wider range of international connections.
By Car

City centre parking is widely available but driving to Anfield on matchday is best avoided. Use public transport from the centre.

The 917 matchday bus
From the city centre, the 917 runs directly to Anfield. Regular buses (26, 27) also serve the route. A taxi takes 15–20 minutes depending on traffic.
