Who will replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool?
Who will replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool?

The news that Jurgen Klopp is set to leave Liverpool Football Club at the end of the season continues to reverberate around the sporting world.

Under the German, Liverpool have been transformed from sleeping giant to multiple trophy winners and there is growing uncertainty within the structure at Anfield surrounding the taboo topic of who will be replacing Klopp.

As Klopp himself has mentioned, talk of replacing him does feel a little premature, with Liverpool still sat at the top of the Premier League and with some huge fixtures ahead of them this season.

In addition, the reds remain on the hunt for another two trophies to join The Carabao Cup Klopp and the team beat Chelsea at Wembley this past weekend to lift. Klopp has his team and their army of fans buzzing at the prospect of filling up that trophy cabinet one final time before he leaves.

However, the summer will soon be here, with Liverpool looking to a Klopp replacement and there has been huge speculation as to who is the right candidate for the job from the 2024/25 season onwards.

Xabi Alonso

As soon as the news about Jurgen Klopp broke, club legend Xabi Alonso was instantly installed as the favourite to take the job with pundits and bookmakers alike.

The Spainard was an integral part of the hugely successful Liverpool side that won the Champions League in 2005 and he is always remembered fondly for his playing days at Anfield.

Alonso has also plied his trade at some of Europe’s biggest clubs, enjoying further success with Real Madid and Bayern Munich, before making the transition to coaching and management.

In the summer of 2023, Alonso was given his big break by Bayer Leverkusen in Germany and so far, this season, the results have been extraordinary.

Leverkusen sit 8 points clear of the chasing pack in the Bundesliga and with the iconic club remarkably having never won the title before, Alonso looks to be on the brink of creating history with the German outfit.

Whether he does or doesn’t manage to bring the Bundesliga title back to the Bay Arena, Alonso has impressed hugely at Bayer Leverkusen and his stock looks to be at an all-time high, with Liverpool seemingly very interested in securing his services.

Roberto De Zerbi

Having been installed as a makeshift replacement for Graham Potter at Brighton in the Autumn of 2022, Roberto De Zerbi has gone on to prove himself as one of the most astute managers in the Premier League.

The fiery Italian has brought a superb brand of football to the south coast, with Brighton continue to perform in both the Premier League and the Europa League and his passion would certainly be appreciated by the Anfield faithful.

Leaving Brighton at this juncture may not feel like the best move for De Zerbi, with the Seagulls still a work in progress and he may wish to oversee the project to its completion.

But with Premier League managerial experience, Roberto De Zerbi could be a good fit for the job, and he would be well received by Liverpool fans.

Julian Nagelsmann

Having been once touted as the brightest young managerial prospect in European football, Julian Nagelsmann is at a relative crossroads in his career.

His stock was at an all-time high when he joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022, with the club ready to embrace his visionary new ideas and playing philosophies.

However, by the Spring of 2023, Nagelsmann was sent packing from the Allianz Arena and replaced by Thomas Tuchel, another man that is currently struggling with the demands of managing Bayern Munich.

With a blotch on his copybook, Nagelsmann would be seen as a hugely risky appointment by all at Anfield, but he clearly has the managerial credentials to operate at one of the biggest clubs in world football.

Zinedine Zidane

A man that needs no introduction, Zinedine Zidane does have one glaring omission from his hugely impressive footballing CV and that is English Premier League experience.

Having overseen two hugely successful periods at Real Madrid, Zinedine Zidane may not be too enthused with having to continue Liverpool’s push for glory, but he remains one of the greats of the game, who may be lured in by the grandeur of Anfield.

A player who truly did it all, Zidane would instantly have the respect of the dressing room and would be able to impart his footballing ideologies but of course, it could have to be a move that suited all parties.

New era at Anfield

Whoever steps into the breach to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield will know all too well of the magnitude of the job that they have on their hands and with some superb managerial candidates in the offing, it should be a fascinating new dawn on the red side of Merseyside.
