FA Cup - Road to Wembley
Whilst it perhaps doesn’t hold the grandeur of the Premier League or the Champions League with many fans, the reality remains that the FA Cup is the oldest cup competition in world football and every English side in it, wants to win it. The four 2024 FA Cup quarter final fixtures were billed as box office and they certainly delivered, with extra time, last minute goals and drama – as well as the traditional cup upset and there are now only 4 sides in the hunt for FA Cup glory at Wembley on Saturday 25th May 2024.
With the draw for the last 4 confirmed too, the remaining sides in the competition know that they have already booked their place at Wembley.
2023/24 FA Cup Quarter Final Recap:
Wolves 2 – 3 Coventry City
Premier League Wolves were expecting to continue their excellent league form and dispatch Championship side Coventry but alas, as so often happens in the FA Cup, the magic of the competition came to the fore once more. Following a drab and dull opening 45 minutes, Coventry kicked into gear with Ellis Simms bagging the opener for Mark Robins’s side. Wolves refused to lie down however and thought they had won the tie when late goals from Rayan Ait-Nouri and Hugo Bueno put them 2-1 up as the clocked turned past the 90 minute mark.
However, as is so often the case in the FA Cup, Coventry produced a remarkable show of grit and determination, with goals from Simms again in the 97th minute and Haji Wright in the 100th minute, securing their place in the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1987, whilst Wolves were left to ponder what might have been.
Manchester City 2 – 0 Newcastle United
Holders Manchester City were expecting to have to lay down the gauntlet to a Newcastle United side, who came into the game ready to fight according to their manager Eddie Howe but in truth, City were truly dominant at the Etihad Stadium. The blues were perhaps a little fortunate to find themselves 2-0 to the good at half time, as two deflected Bernado Silva goals put them ahead at half time. Newcastle struggled to threaten at all from then on, with City squandering chances to extend their lead but it was enough for Pep Guardiola’s men, who are looking to defend the FA Cup for the first time in their history, whilst the trophy wait for Newcastle bounds on.
Chelsea 4 – 2 Leicester City
More late drama was on the agenda at Stamford Bridge, as Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea did it the hard way against Championship high-flyers Leicester City, All looked to be going to plan for Chelsea, who were 2-0 to the good through Marc Cucurella and Cole Palmer but a Raheem Sterling penalty proved to be costly for the blues. A bizarre Axel Disasi own goal and one of the goals of the round from Stephy Mavididi pulled the Foxes level and they were full of belief. Callum Doyle was then sent off for Leicester, adding to the difficulty of their task and they were made to pay, as injury time strikes from Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke condemned Leicester to defeat and propelled Chelsea into yet another FA Cup semi-final.
Manchester United 4 – 3 Liverpool (AET)
The biggest tie of the round was always going to be Manchester United against Liverpool and inevitably, the clash of the titans at Old Trafford did not disappoint. United were in the ascendency from the outset and took the lead through Scott McTominay before Liverpool hit back through Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah to lead at half time. United rode their luck but hit back to force extra time through Anthony, but their chance looked to had gone, as quadruple chasing Liverpool went ahead in extra time through Harvey Elliott. However, United never gave up hope and late goals from Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo secured the win for United in an all-time FA Cup classic and quashed Liverpool’s dream of four trophies this season, whilst United’s only realistic chance of winning a trophy rumbles on.
