Premier League Final Day Review - 2023/24
Premier League Final Day Review - 2023/24

The Premier League title race had bubbled for the whole season but those chasing a dramatic end to the campaign didn’t get what they wished for. Manchester City knew that they needed a win over West Ham United on the final day to clinch the title and as they generally do, the blues duly obliged – clinching their 4th Premier League title in a row, their 6th under Pep Guardiola and their 8th since their first in 2012.

Elsewhere, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa have secured Champions League football for next season, with Tottenham settling for a place in the Europa League. Down at the bottom of the pile, Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United will be returning to the Championship next season.

With the footballing fraternity ready for a small break before the European Championship in the summer, the small matter of the FA Cup and the Champions League finals lies in wait.

2023/24 Premier League GW38 Recap:

Manchester City 3 – 1 West Ham United
The pressure was ramped up on Manchester City heading down the final stretch, but City made short work of West Ham at the Etihad to win the title. Phil Foden netted twice inside the first 20 minutes to ease the nerves, but Mohammed Kudus’s spectacular overhead kick gave West Ham a glimmer of hope. Rodri bagged a second half strike for City to seal the win, sparking wild scenes of celebration for the blues.

Arsenal 2 – 1 Everton
With the Gunners relying on a slip from Manchester City to force their way into the title picture, they ended up leaving it late to seal a win themselves. Idrissa Gueye opened the scoring for Everton, adding to the feeling of worry around the Emirates Stadium but Arsenal managed to pick up a win on the final day through goals from Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kai Havertz.

Liverpool 2 – 0 Wolves
The Jurgen Klopp swansong ended with a win at Anfield, as Liverpool made light work of Wolves on the final day. Nelson Semedo was sent off for Wolves in the first half, with Liverpool cashing in before half time with goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Jarnell Quansah to send Klopp off to the sunset with a win.

Crystal Palace 5 – 0 Aston Villa
With Aston Villa having secured their Champions League football spot for next season, they were hammered by a resurgent Crystal Palace on the final day. A Jean Philippe Mateta hattrick and an Eberechi Eze brace sealed a superb win for the Eagles, who look to be ready to build for next season.

Sheffield United 0 – 3 Tottenham
Spurs have enjoyed a strong first season under Ange Postecoglou and they finished it in style on the road at Sheffield United. The Blades were relegated a while ago and were no match for Spurs, who picked up a comfortable final day win through a Dejan Kulusevski brace and a Pedro Porro strike.

Chelsea 2 – 1 Bournemouth
Chelsea’s resurgence towards the end of the season came to a strong finish, as they managed to hold on to beat Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge. Moises Caicedo opened the scoring with an incredible strike from the halfway line, with Raheem Sterling doubling their lead and Chelsea held on despite Enes Unal’s late consolation.

Brighton 0 – 2 Manchester United
Roberto De Zerbi said goodbye to Brighton with a home loss to Manchester United to end what has been another compelling campaign. United netted twice in the second half through Diogo Dalot and Rasmus Hojlund, to set them up for the FA Cup final against Manchester City this weekend.

Burnley 1 – 2 Nottingham Forest
The return of Chris Wood at Burnley had its inevitable ending, as the New Zealand striker netted a brace to seal Nottingham Forest’s place in the Premier League. Josh Cullen pulled a goal back for the Clarets, but the Championship beckons for Vincent Kompany’s side next season.

Brentford 2 – 4 Newcastle United
Newcastle managed to secure 7th place in the table, as they secured a big final day win on the road at Brentford. Toon were 3-0 to the good at the end of the first half, through goals from Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak. Brentford set up a grandstand finish through Vitaly Janelt and Yoann Wissa, but Bruno Guimares sealed the win for Newcastle late on.

Luton Town 2 – 4 Fulham
Fulham picked up a final day win, in an entertaining encounter against Luton Town. Raul Jimenez netted twice for Fulham, who also saw Adama Traore and Harry Wilson get on the scoresheet. Luton kept touch with a Carlton Morris penalty and an Alfie Doughty strike but the Hatters are heading back down to the Championship next year.
