Wimbledon fever set to sweep the tennis world once more in 2024
Wimbledon fever set to sweep the tennis world once more in 2024

Few sporting events capture the hearts and minds of onlookers in the way that Wimbledon does and once again in 2024, the best players in the world descend on SW19 in pursuit of tennis playing immortality.

A mere 12 months ago, both Carlos Alcaraz and Marketa Vondrousova clinched their maiden Wimbledon titles etched their names into the annuls of time on the grass courts of South-West London and there will be a whole host of players looking to repeat that feat this year.

One year is a long time in any sport but it does seem as if plenty has changed within both men’s and women’s tennis since those two triumphs in 2023 and questions are being asked as to who could emerge victorious in the most-watched tennis tournament on the planet this summer.

Astonishing Alcaraz

The nature in which Carlos Alcaraz secured his first Wimbledon title over Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final in 2023 will live long in the memory for anybody who watched it, and the Spaniard looks to be the favourite to defend his title.

Fresh off the back of his win at the French Open last month, Alcaraz is purring once more in the world of men’s tennis and his performances have been nothing short of spectacular in 2024 but he knows he will have to perform at his optimum level if he is to defend his title on the famous Wimbledon grass.

Alcaraz now has 3 Grand Slam titles to his name and his presence in any draw strikes fear into the chasing pack, but the big names are lining up behind him in pursuit of his title.

Subdued Djokovic

24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic has cut a subdued figure in 2024 and many people have already written the Serb off here at Wimbledon. A dangerous thing to do of course, with Djokovic known for his tendency to prove the doubters wrong when it matters but there has been a strange air of inconsistency surrounding the Serb this season.

No titles have been added to his brimming cabinet this term, with some shock losses and off-court issues along the way and he looks to have a long journey ahead of him at Wimbledon, if he is to turn things around at SW19.

Sensational Sinner leads the rest

World number one Jannik Sinner has enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough year in 2024, climbing to the very top of the game and winning the Australian Open title and he is seen as being more than in with a shot of winning Wimbledon this year.

The Italian is a rough diamond on grass, but he has won a couple of events in the build up to Wimbledon this year and he is another player everybody will be hoping to avoid in the draw.

Elsewhere, it seems as if there will be plenty of challengers for the crown, with Russian duo Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev never too far away in the Grand Slams, whilst Alexander Zverev could spring a few surprises, fresh off his run to the final of the French Open.

Home hopes lie with Jack Draper in the men’s draw, with the young Brit enjoying an excellent run of form leading up to Wimbledon, not something that can be said of his compatriots Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans, whilst Andy Murray looks set for a sensational Wimbledon send off.

Women’s draw there for the taking

As has been the case in many Grand Slam events in the women’s game over the past few years, any one of the 128 players that line up for the main draw at the start of the tournament will fancy their chances of going all the way.

Marketa Vondrousova shocked the world to win the title in 2023, with the big-hitting Czech having broken into the world’s top 10 since and she has set the blueprint for plenty of players chasing a Wimbledon title in 2024.

Iga Swiatek remains the force to be reckoned with in the women’s game but her inconsistency on grass does raise a question mark, a query that could be levelled at Aryna Sabalenka too.

Coco Gauff announced herself to the world at Wimbledon as a teenager back in 2017 and she certainly has the game to mix it with the best on grass.

British hopes will be lying with Katie Boulter and Emma Raducanu, two players that are more than capable of beating anybody on their day and how the home crowd would love to roar home a first British singles winner since 1977.
